This was a really interesting site on our trip and I glad we stayed an extra day for it. The Old Pen gave a really good tour (thanks, Jennifer!). Many of the buildings are from different decades, and have interesting stories behind them.
Did you know, for instance, that one of the buildings was designed by an inmate, and I don’t believe the inmate was an architect before prison, either. There was even another inmate–an assassin!–who asked to be allowed to stay in prison even after his release. He lived out his life at the pen.
Everything was interesting, though the solitary confinement and gallows areas were VERY uncomfortable and erie.
Okay, trust us, this doesn’t happen everyday! Usually poor Sensen is just like any other well fed toddler, making a royal mess of his cheesy eggs.
This morning, though, TW had the foresight to head off any possible whining with a breakfast of strawberries, eggs, and pancakes. It came up served on a silver platter!
After coming back from Marsing, we head to the Brick Oven Bistro for dinner. The food wasn’t that great, but they did have some area beers. TW had another Twilight beer from Full Sail.
Unfortunately, I don’t have any pictures of Givens Hot Springs. We rolled into Givens, which is nestled amongst beautiful scenery, just past a state waste disposal site (bad spot to bathe in a spring? You tell me!).
When we set up the tent, the first thing TW noticed was our little friend on the tent, there. Naturally, it REALLY freaked her out to have a preying mantis hanging out in her child’s sleeping spot!
In Big Daddy’s words from over in Iraq, “OH HELL NO. Just the fact that it eats its mate is good enough for me!”
Needless to say, Big Daddy payed for another night at the Grove.
TW promised me (Sprinkles) a free drink at Bardenay if I’d roll up the tent. Sounds like a deal!
Here we are en route to Givens Hot Springs. We’ll stay the night there and try for the Basque Museum and the Penitentiary tomorrow.
Neither the visit to the Basque Museum nor our plan to drink locally distilled liquor worked out! I guess the Basque people really like their Independence Days? Instead we tried some local wine at Grape Escape. The staff was very nice and knowledgeable, and the prices were surprisingly good.
Now off to Givens Hot Springs!
