Bugs! Should we stay here? July 4, 2009

Filed under: Uncategorized — novellae @ 11:28 PM

We pitched our tent here in Idaho, and as we were doing so, found a big ol preying mantis on our tent!

The woman working at the hot springs didn’t know too much about them, but said they had small mouths and are a sign of good luck.

Well, are they? Can they sting/bite/hurt people in any way? Should we stay here?

La Grande, Oregon: Hought’s 24 Flavors July 4, 2009

If you know Sprinkles, you’ll know that her favorite ice cream, candy, and taffy are all the same: old fashioned black licorice. However, given the funky taste and the blue-green stain that black licorice leaves, it’s not the easiest treat to find.

Driving through La Grande, Oregon in search of coffee and a bathroom, we happened upon Hought’s 24 Flavors.

There, the owner, Carla, fries some tasty jalapeƱo poppers and packs a meeean ice cream cone! And guess what? Black licorice is on the menu!

The rise in elevation out of the Columbia River Gorge are really struck me as interesting. You could really see the change in terrain from rolling hills to jagged peaks of scrub brush. I love this type of topography.

I thought these metal horses on the bridge railing were just SO cool. Wish metal art were more widespread!

Central/Eastern Oregon Windmills July 4, 2009

I know they’re quite different looking from their Dutch counterparts, but I have always been a fan of the new fashioned wind mills. They just stand so straight and tall, like they are really, really happy with their spot in life.

The boxes pictured on the right are, I think, the Session Red, a really light and tasty beer from Full Sail.

We ordered a taster tray of seven beers, including a beer called Grandsun of Spot. That one had so many IBUs (International Bitterness Units–yep, we had to ask, too) that Eva called it “the liquor of beers!”
